Detailed Description
This is a decorative paint characterised by special antique effects reminiscent of the decorations found in rural houses dating back to the Italian Renaissance period. It is no coincidence that this product is also known as “false stucco” or “poor art”. It can be applied to different surfaces such as cement, plasterboard, wood, iron, PVC, glass and light alloys, and to surfaces previously treated with alkyd resin or polyurethane paints, etc. It is especially recommended when painting doors, window and door frames, chairs, tables and other types of furniture after a previous treatment. Apply two coats of the special water-based white PRIMART 500 primer for indoor use and white PRIMART 300 for outdoor use. Thanks to this special water-based primer the painter can achieve durable and antique effects using ARTECO’. Alternatively, PRIMER 200 may be used as a water-based undercoat for indoor or outdoor use.
CHARACTERISTICS:
ARTECO’ 3 for Indoor use is available in cans of 1 litre or 4 litres. Mix white ARTECO’ paint with its own tin of ADDITIVAL to achieve the colours shown in the colour chart as explained below: 0.050 litre ADDITIVAL tin for 1 litre of ARTECO’ or 0.125 litre ADDITIVAL tin for a 4 litre ARTECO’ tin.
ARTECO’ 9 for Outdoor and Indoor use is available in 33 ready-to-use colours (see: Colour Sheet). If ARTECO’ 9 is applied outdoors it must be immediately protected with FINISH V 15. The ARTECO’ 9 antique effect is obtained without applying several coats of paint, otherwise its final aesthetic aspect will be damaged and will lack visual appeal.
APPLICATION: The procedure used to achieve the special antique effect shown in the catalogue is explained below.
1 - 1 - Apply two coats of ARTECO’ using the special KIT 39 (this contains particular brushes which are suitable for ARTECO’ paint). It is recommended that the brush is used in circular movements, pressing it unevenly and applying a small quantity of paint. Brush-hairs should be dipped 1 mm into the paint (use just a little of the product for ARTECO 3 and a larger quantity for ARTECO’ 9). Once the work has been finished, a natural antique effect will decorate the wall. Finish and touch up the corners and narrow surfaces which are difficult to paint using a smaller brush in KIT 39. Let the first coat of ARTECO’ dry (approximately 2 - 3 hours at 20°C), then apply the second coat using the same technique. N.B. - Avoid using the brush with linear movements. During application of the second coat, antique effects may be accentuated and paint colour might change slightly if the painter presses down on the brush, or if part of the surface is painted over again (for instance colour 28 may turn into colour 89). In this way every colour can vary in intensity as well as in shade..
Waxing: ARTECO’ can be treated with a special wax, water-based Cera Lucidante 370 or 420 (Rococò Range) to achieve semi-shiny, washable surfaces which are velvet to the touch. Once the ARTECO’ has completely dried, use wax to remove all the white effects caused by an excess quantity of paint applied on the surface. The wax should be spread using a brush or a spatula. Let the product dry for 3 - 4 hours at 20°C, then rub the surface with a woollen cloth to achieve a semi-polished effect.
All products in the ARTECO' range should be mixed thoroughly before use.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
2 - Old indoor walls. Remove old non-adhering and peeling paint from the support and wash using water and a suitable soap product. Next, apply a coat of PRIMART 500 diluted 50% with water to act as a fixative. After approximately 4 hours at 20°C, apply a second brushed coat of PRIMART 500 diluted 15 - 20% with water. If, however, the surfaces are clean and not peeling, apply a coat of water-based PRIMART 500. After approximately 4 hours at 20°C, proceed with the application of ARTECO' as described in point 1.
3 - Old outdoor walls. Remove old non-adhering and peeling paint from the support and wash using water and a suitable soap product. Next, apply a coat of PRIMART 300 diluted 50% with the odourless thinner ISOSAN 3 A or an odourless mineral resin to act as a fixative. After approximately 4 hours at 20°C, apply a second brushed coat of PRIMART 300 diluted 15 - 20% or two coats of PRIMER 200 diluted 15 - 20% with water. If, however, the surfaces are clean and not peeling, apply a coat of water-based PRIMART 300 or PRIMER 200. After approximately 4 hours at 20°C, proceed with the application of ARTECO' 9 as described in point 1.
4 - New indoor walls. Stucco the surface where necessary using VALSTUC. When dry, after approximately 4 hours at 20°C, sand the surface and apply a coat of water-based PRIMART 500. After approximately 4 hours at 20°C, proceed with the application of ARTECO' as described in point 1.
5 - New outdoor walls. Stucco the surface where necessary using STUCCO FAST 150. When dry, after approximately 4 hours at 20°C, sand the surface and apply a coat of water-based PRIMART 300 or PRIMER 200. After approximately 4 hours at 20°C, proceed with the application of ARTECO' 9 as described in point 1.
6 - Wood, PVC, glass, light alloys and painted iron. Remove all grease from the support and sand well to improve adhesion. Apply a coat of primer which is suited to the type of surface, then apply a coat of water-based PRIMART 500. After approximately 4 hours at 20°C, proceed with the application of ARTECO' as described in point 1.
7 - New iron (not treated). Remove all grease from the support and apply one coat (or more) of WIKTOR water-based anti-rust treatment. When this is dry, after approximately 4 hours at 20°C, apply a coat of water-based PRIMART 500. After approximately 8 hours at 20°C, proceed with the application of ARTECO' as described in point 1.
8 - Protective coating. To increase washability and resistance to knocks and abrasions, ARTECO' - when applied indoors - may be protected after it has dried (after approximately 4 hours at 20°C) with one or two brush-applied coats of the breathable opaque protective product FINISH V 12. On the other hand, when ARTECO' is applied outdoors, after it has dried completely (after approximately 4 hours at 20 °C) it must be protected with one or two brush-applied coats of the breathable opaque protective product FINISH V 15. FINISH V 12 should be diluted 100% with water, while FINISH V 15 is ready to use. The suggested application technique for FINISH V 12 and V 15 consists of using the brush in rotational - never linear - movements, exerting light pressure.

N.B. - All the pieces of information hereafter given are precise and accurate on the basis of our own experience. However, as the conditions in which ARTECO’ is applied are beyond our direct control, the manufacturer does not assume any responsibility for the advice and suggestions given.
There may be a 20 - 30% colour-shade difference between one batch and another, or between the colours once they are applied and the standard ones shown in the catalogue. We recommend that a preliminary test is performed on a small area before work is commenced. It is strongly recommended that the product is tested first on a small surface, considering that ARTECO’ is made of natural products and special resins which react differently depending on humidity, heat, ventilation and the application method used. In this way each application will be personalised and it will have its own design.
IMPORTANT: THE FINAL APPEARANCE OF ARTECO’ DOES NOT HAVE A STANDARD PATTERN BUT VARIES FROM PAINTER TO PAINTER ACCORDING TO SKILLS AND APPLICATION METHODS. FOR THIS REASON IT IS SUGGESTED THAT EACH APPLICATION IS CARRIED OUT BY THE SAME PAINTER IN ORDER TO AVOID ANY FLAWS IN COLOUR SHADES AND IN THE DESIGN.
It is recommended that the KIT Professional 39 – five pure special bristle-brushes - is used in order to increase the speed at which the work is performed and to achieve the best results with ARTECO’
